Maratha Shipyards

The first ship building operations began at Kalyan, Bhiwandi, Pen and Panvel. All of these were river ports, many KMs away from the sea.
Excessive deforestation has led to silting up of these rivers. This map of 1946 shows the reduced state of these rivers. Only the river Ulhas of Kalyan is left navigable in a broad sense.
